Matthew 12
A Tree Known by Its Fruit
33 “Either make the tree good and its fruit good, or else make the tree bad and its fruit bad; for a tree is known by its fruit. 34 Brood of vipers! How can you, being evil, speak good things? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. 35 A good man out of the good treasure of his heart[g] brings forth good things, and an evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth evil things. 36 But I say to you that for every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment. 37 For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.”
The thing about this text that really stood out to me is the part where Jesus says that "every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgement". The reason why it stands out to me is because Jesus is saying be who you really are. Stop pretending to be something or someone that you are not. He is saying that if you are speaking one thing out your mouth and it doesn't line up with what is really in your heart then your words are "idle" and you will have to give an account for it. He says either make the tree good and it's fruit good or make the tree bad and it's fruit bad. He is saying to the Pharisees that you cannot speak good things if you are evil. Jesus knows our thoughts. There are many times in the bible where it says that Jesus "knowing their thoughts" responded. Jesus knows whether or not the words you speak add up to what you are really thinking. If you know you need to repent of something, then repent and turn to God who is able to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. But don't sit up there and try to cover up what you really are and pretent to be something else. Jesus knows who the real hypocrits are. He knows the people who really love God and the people who are pretending they love God.
1 John 1:9
New King James Version (NKJV)
9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
